GitHub Codespaces freely available to all GitHub users

The GitHub Codespaces feature is now generally available to GitHub Free and GitHub Pro plan users, GitHub announced on November 10. Access to the GitHub-hosted development environments has also been expanded.

GitHub Free users will be entitled to 60 hours of free Codespaces usage per month, while GitHub Pro plan users will be entitled to 90 hours. After Codespaces were released last year for GitHub Team and GitHub Enterprise plans, many developers moved to cloud-based development environments.

Meanwhile, GitHub has enhanced Codespaces with a number of new features. In its announcement, the company highlighted the following points:

A public beta version of JetBrains IDEs, including IntelliJ and PyCharm, is now available. From the JetBrains Marketplace, developers can download JetBrains Gateway and install the GitHub Codespaces plugin. Codespaces has supported Visual Studio Code since its inception.

There is now public beta support for JupyterLab notebooks.

Codespaces powered by GPUs are available as a limited beta, enabling developers to run machine learning models within a codespace.

Templates are available for starting new projects based on common app frameworks. With templates, developers can simply click into a development environment and begin coding without the need for configuration.

The management of codespaces at scale has been made easier with support for organization-level APIs and administrative policies for teams and enterprises.
