Google Translate is now available in 24 new languages spoken by more than 300 million people worldwide.
Ten of the new languages are in Africa, including Lingala, Twi, and Tigrinya.
A US-based company said Google Translate has helped break down language barriers and connect communities around the world for years.
As a result, it wants to help those whose languages “are not represented in most technology.”
As many as 50 million people speak Bhoj puri in northern India, Nepal and Fiji, and 300,000 people speak Dhivehi in the Maldives.
In total 133 languages are now supported by Google Translate.
Google explains that they use a machine learning model that learns how to “translate into another language without ever seeing an example.”
When there are no large datasets of human translations available for training a computer, this can be useful.
However, the company admits that the technology isn’t perfect.
