Intel has teased a new line of server GPUs, codenamed Rialto Bridge, that will power the next generation of record-breaking supercomputers.
New Ponte Vecchio cards feature 160 Xe GPU cores and “offer significantly increased density, performance, and efficiency”, according to the company.
Intel has remained tight-lipped about the broader specification and potential performance gains, but it did reveal Rialto Bridge GPUs will begin sampling in mid-2023.
Intel in the HPC market
For Intel, the high performance computing (HPC) market has long been a strategic priority. In spite of the company’s historic dominance in the server processor space, there are signs that its lead may be slipping.
Among the top ten most powerful supercomputers, only one is powered by Intel, according to the latest Top500 rankings, with AMD and Arm chips battling it out. AMD is also making inroads further down the list.
