Microsoft’s programming editor will also feature new default color themes with its April 2023 release.

The April 2023 release of Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code source code editor introduces built-in profile templates for Python and Java, along with new color schemes.

You can download Visual Studio Code 1.78 for Windows, Linux, and Mac from visualstudio.com.

As part of VS Code 1.78, profile templates are available for Python, Java, data science, Node.js, and Angular, so developers can customize VS Code according to their specific workflows. The update also includes new default color themes for Python, Java, data science, and Node.js, replacing Dark+ and Light+.

Visual Studio Code 1.78 also includes the following new features and improvements:

The old diff algorithm is being deprecated. The new diff algorithm produces better diffs in many cases, but it may be slower for some documents. While the old algorithm remains the default for the diff editor, plans call for gradually changing the default to the new algorithm and measuring its performance.

For JavaScript in HTML blocks, the js/ts.implicitProjectConfig.strictNullChecks setting can be used to enforce strict null checks.

In order to insert and replace colors, users can now launch a standalone color picker.

It is now possible to enable Continuous Run for individual tests.

It is possible to drag and drop videos into Markdown files.

In Markdown cells of notebooks, developers can drag and drop image files to create attachments.

There is support for TypeScript 5.1. This version of TypeScript is currently in beta testing.

The inline completion feature has been rewritten and a number of bugs have been fixed. The Accept Line command has also been added, and Accept Word now works across lines as well.

In the Source Control message box, Code Actions and Quick Fixes are now supported.

CURRENT_TIMEZONE_OFFSET is a new snippet variable that returns the current timezone offset in the format +HHMM or -HHMM.

Users who use screen readers may exclude hints from the aria-label of a feature by using the “accessibility.verbosity.diff-editor” and “accessibility.verbosity.terminal” settings. New audio cues are also supported.

It is now possible to commit files to Git Large File Storage (LFS) in GitHub repositories using Visual Studio Code for the Web.

Previous version VS Code 1.77, released on March 30, featured deeper integration with GitHub Copilot AI.
