Interview: Presenting Your Best Self” displayed on a screen.

Good Day, everyone! Welcome to our Career Show organised by London School of Emerging Technology (LSET) and today’s topic is Appearing in an Interview, where we uncover the strategies to present your best self and make a lasting impression on potential employers. I’m your Elizabeth, and I’m excited to guide you through this essential topic today.

An interview is an opportunity to showcase your skills and qualifications and demonstrate your professionalism and fit within a company’s culture. So, let’s dive into the strategies and techniques that will help you appear confident, prepared, and impressive in any interview scenario.

The first step in appearing in an interview is dressing to impress. Your outfit should reflect professionalism, align with the company culture, and make you feel confident.

Research the company’s dress code and industry norms. When in doubt, it’s better to err on the side of dressing more formally. Remember, a polished appearance shows respect for the opportunity and conveys your commitment to professionalism.

Pay attention to details such as clean and pressed attire, well-groomed hair, and minimal accessories. Remember, your appearance should complement your qualifications and not distract from them.

Confidence is critical when appearing in an interview. Let’s explore the role of body language in conveying confidence and creating a positive impression.

Start by maintaining good posture throughout the interview. Sit up straight, relax your shoulders, and avoid slouching. Good posture exudes confidence and engagement.

Make eye contact with the interviewer(s) to show attentiveness and interest. However, be mindful of not staring excessively, as it can make others uncomfortable.

Smile naturally and genuinely. A warm and friendly smile helps create a positive connection with the interviewers and conveys your enthusiasm for the opportunity.

Use confident hand gestures when appropriate, but avoid excessive fidgeting or nervous movements. Practice being mindful of your body language beforehand to ensure a secure and composed presence.

Active listening and effective communication are essential skills during an interview. Let’s explore how to excel in these areas.

Listen attentively to the interviewer’s questions and avoid interrupting. Take a moment to gather your thoughts before responding. This demonstrates your ability to actively listen and provide thoughtful answers.

When answering questions, be concise and articulate. Avoid rambling or going off on tangents. Prepare and practise your responses beforehand to ensure clarity and coherence.

Use positive and professional language, avoiding slang or jargon that may not be familiar to the interviewer. Speak with a moderate pace, enunciate clearly, and vary your tone to maintain interest and engagement.

Preparation and research are crucial to appearing confident and knowledgeable during an interview. Let’s discuss the steps you can take to be well-prepared.

Research the company thoroughly, including its mission, values, products, services, and recent news. Familiarise yourself with the job description and be prepared to discuss how your skills align with the position’s requirements.

Practise common interview questions and prepare concise and relevant responses. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your answers to behavioural questions, highlighting specific examples of your accomplishments and problem-solving abilities.

Prepare thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer(s) about the role, company, or future opportunities. This demonstrates your genuine interest and engagement with the interview process.

Appearing in an interview requires careful attention to your appearance, body language, communication skills, and preparation. By following these strategies and techniques, you can confidently present your best self and leave a lasting impression on potential employers.

Remember, an interview is an opportunity to showcase not just your qualifications but also your personality, professionalism, and fit within the company’s culture. Approach each interview with confidence, authenticity, and a genuine desire to learn and grow.
