Different Types of Machine Learning

Machine Learning (ML) is a powerful part of artificial intelligence that teaches systems to learn from data. It enables computers to recognise patterns, make predictions, and improve over time without being manually programmed for each task. From everyday apps to advanced research, machine learning is behind many of the technologies we now take for granted.

There are four core types of machine learning. Each one takes a different approach to how a system processes data and learns from it.

1. Supervised Learning

Supervised learning is based on labelled data, meaning the input data is paired with the correct output. The system learns from these examples and applies what it learns to new, unseen data.

Common applications include:

  • Regression – Predicting continuous values such as prices or temperatures.
  • Classification – Categorising data into classes, like spam detection or disease diagnosis.

2. Unsupervised Learning

This type uses unlabelled data. The system identifies patterns or structures independently. It helps explore data and reveal hidden groupings.

Popular methods include:

  • Clustering – Clustering groups similar data into sets. Example: customer segmentation.
  • Dimensionality Reduction – Dimensionality reduction simplifies complex data and retains important patterns.

3. Reinforcement Learning

Reinforcement learning mimics how humans learn through experience. A system interacts with its environment, makes decisions, and learns from the rewards or penalties it receives.

This type is widely used in:

  • Robotics
  • Self-driving cars
  • Strategy-based games

4. Semi-Supervised Learning

This hybrid approach uses a small amount of labelled data along with a larger set of unlabelled data. You might be new to tech or aiming to improve your skills. Our expert-led approach keeps learning focused and practical.

Semi-supervised learning helps achieve high accuracy with fewer labelled examples.
