London School of Emerging Technology > Career Services > Interview and CV Tips for IT Career > CV Preparation: Unlocking Your Professional Potential

Good Day, everyone! Welcome to our Career Show organised by London School of Emerging Technology (LSET) and today’s topic is CV Preparation, where we uncover the strategies to present your best self and make a lasting impression on potential employers. I’m your host Elizabeth, and I’m excited to guide you through this essential topic today.

Your CV is more than just a piece of paper; it’s your personal marketing tool that showcases your skills, experiences, and achievements to potential employers. So, let’s start creating a CV that stands out from the crowd and opens doors to exciting career opportunities.

The first step in crafting an impressive CV is understanding its critical sections. These sections include the contact information, professional summary or objective statement, work experience, education, skills, and other relevant sections such as certifications, publications, or volunteer work.

The contact information section is crucial, enabling employers to contact you quickly. Include your full name, phone number, email address, and professional social media profiles like LinkedIn.

Next, the professional summary or objective statement provides a concise overview of your career goals, skills, and qualifications. Tailor this section to match the job requirements you’re applying for.

Your work experience section should highlight your previous roles, responsibilities, and accomplishments. Focus on quantifiable achievements and use action verbs to describe your contributions. Remember to keep it relevant and concise, emphasising the skills that align with the desired job.

Moving to the education section, include your academic qualifications, degrees, and relevant certifications. If you’re a recent graduate or have limited work experience, highlight relevant coursework, research projects, or internships to showcase your potential.

Remember to list your skills, both hard and soft. Hard skills refer to specific technical abilities, while soft skills encompass interpersonal and communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and adaptability.

Lastly, include any additional relevant sections, such as certifications, publications, or volunteer work. These sections can add depth to your CV and demonstrate your commitment to personal and professional growth.

Now that we’ve covered the key sections, let’s talk about some CV do’s and don’ts that will help you make a positive impression on potential employers.

Tailor your CV to match the job requirements and company culture. Research the organisation and incorporate relevant keywords and phrases to demonstrate your fit.

Don’t exaggerate or lie about your skills, experiences, or qualifications. Employer’s value honesty and authenticity, and misrepresenting yourself can lead to severe consequences.

Do keep your CV concise and easy to read. Use bullet points, headings, and subheadings to organise information effectively. Employers often skim through numerous CVs, so make yours stand out with clear and concise content.

Remember to proofread your CV multiple times. Spelling and grammatical errors can undermine your professionalism and attention to detail. Ask a friend or mentor to review it as well, as fresh eyes can catch mistakes you may have missed.

Crafting a winning CV requires time, effort, and attention to detail. By following the key sections and do’s and don’ts we discussed today, you’ll be on your way to presenting a compelling CV that opens doors to exciting career opportunities.

Remember, a CV is not a static document. Update it continuously.
